Award winners 2009/10!

Most Improved player:- MEN

Half the man he was a couple of seasons ago. There is no secret to this man’s improvements. An obsessive fitness regime, attending every training session, wearing skin tight lycra at every opportunity. Having only recently broken into the Men’s 1s he is now one of the first on the team sheet.

The winner is Liam Burgoyne.

Most Improved player:- LADIES

This player has made great strides forward this year. She shows increased maturity in her play and is always an asset to whichever team manages to get her on a Saturday!

The winner is Hattie Tipper.

Young player of the year:- MEN

He may be small, but this player is a tenacious tackler. In a season he’s passed through the 2s to find himself on the line at short corners for the Men’s 1s – he still needs to learn how to stop the ball with his stick rather than body. We’re also not convinced he’s got as many girlfriends as he claims as none are here tonight.

The winner is Ollie Sole.

Young player of the year:- LADIES

This player has shown great determination whether playing for the Ladies 3s or 2s. She listens to the experienced players to perform well and battles hard. She not only plays hockey – she is involved heavily with sports at school and is also a member of Biggleswade Athletics Club.

The winner is Amelia Wood.

Ladies 1s Players Player

This player joined the Club only this season playing for the Ladies 2s. After a few games was asked to play up due to an injury in the 1s, played well and stayed! She is a bubbly, encouraging character, never has a harsh word to say about anyone and will be a fantastic Captain next season in the East League!!!

The winner is Paulette Martin.

Ladies 2s Players Player

The players’ player for the Ladies 2s for this season is someone who decided to drop teams and has proved a real asset with determined runs and stepping into the role of captain when required. With good knowledge of the game she has helped both the experienced and younger players alike.

The winner is Natalie Nunn.

Ladies 3s Players Player

She has played every game this season, giving 100% in each one, she is always ready with advice and encouragement for the youngsters and her skills and commitment are an example to us all.

The winner is Di Tipper.

Ladies 4s Players Player

For outstanding commitment to the team – and scoring a healthy 11 goals! – the Ladies 4s Players Player for 2009/10 is Liz Orbell.

Men’s 1s Players Player

He didn’t get sent off, he didn’t twist his sock, he didn’t go skiing. He also chipped in with a dozen goals, plenty of assists and always worked hard for the teams.

Men’s 1s player of the season is Adam Knibbs.

Men’s 2s Players Player

Despite conceding more goals than any other ‘keeper in the club, and surviving the trauma of seeing his career at Matalan finish. Arguably he owes some of this award to Stuart West for deciding he’d rather roll about in the mud with hairy men than play a proper sport.

The winner is Adam Symons.

Men’s 3s Players Player

This player has had an excellent season primarily at right back. His spatial awareness, tackling and distribution have improved greatly over the season. As the team's youngest player, he has also been our most consistent one, showing a maturity beyond his years. This player, plus others such as Ben Holder and Luke Bridger, deserve to be moving up through the men’s squads.

The winner is George Tipper.

Vets Players Player

This player returned to the Vets this year after a brief season’s absence. Always prepared to contribute towards the overall common goal, he is one of those players that works hard for the team every week as our left half (a position which may be viewed by some as an unglamorous and potentially defensive role). He has instead taken this position by the scruff of its neck and made it his own. He has, at the same time, managed to score more league goals this season than any other player in the team! A remarkable achievement indeed!

The winner is Rob Glover.

Top Goalscorer:- Mens

Pushed all the way by Keiran Williams, who has lost a lot of weight and been surprisingly good in front of goal since he joined from St Neots.

The winner is a player who the self pass rule was made for, has made plenty of efforts in bringing the youth along and working on intra-club relationships with the ladies section. With an impressive record of 19 goals, at better than a goal a game – the winner this season is John Wheeler.

Top Goalscorer:- Women

This year we have a tie for top ladies goalscorer – as we do for second place. Both these players have scored an impressive 15 goals – they are Amanda Wood and Tina Fury.

Team of the Year:- Men’s

With a team of experienced stalwarts, each week they appear to find another half dozen teenagers to throw into senior hockey. This really is the side that will define S&S men’s future. Also, they didn’t get 20 yellow cards in the season, they weren’t relegated and you don’t need to be in the higher tax bracket to afford their match fees,

The winners are the Men’s 3s.

Team of the Year:- Ladies

This team has won the 5 Counties Premier League for first time ever, and next year will be playing in the East League. Out of 18 games, they scored 57 goals for and only let in 13 goals – an impressive result!

The winners are the Ladies 1s.

Club Person of the Year

This year’s award goes to a person who has given huge amounts of time to both his senior team, and the juniors. Week in week out he co-organises the Men’s 3s squad, then on a number of Sundays he has managed the U11 and U13 teams in various county tournaments. Both his sons now play for the Club too, so he is contributing in many ways!

The Club Person of 209/10 is Trevor Bridger.

Club donkey of the season

On his own he’s received more yellow cards this year than the entire ladies section, the Men’s Vets, 3s and 2s. For his contribution to the Herts & Beds Hockey Umpires Association Respect Campaign we would like to award Adam Nott a special donkey of the year award.
